"Flying Hansel and Gretel" - The Power of Influencers
In 2010, the Flying Steps with their founder Vartan Bassil and with the Berlin opera director Christoph Hagel presented a novel project at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin:
"Flying Bach" was the successful combination of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier with break dance.
Since then, over a million people in more than 50 countries worldwide have seen Flying Bach.
In 2023, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Flying Steps, Vartan Bassil and Christoph Hagel will present their new collaboration to the audience: "Flying Hansel and Gretel" will celebrate its world premiere on 1 October 2023 at the Kölner Philharmonie, followed by a tour of 13 German cities.
The international dance company Flying Steps has deliberately chosen this "original German" material. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and Humperdinck's opera of the same name, the Flying Steps and Christoph Hagel translate the story into our time with elements of break dance, hip hop and rap.
Today, "Hansel & Gretel" are "sent into the forest" in a different way - but they are no less alone on TikTok and Instagram than they were in Grimm's time.
The Flying Steps perform "Hansel & Gretel" at the highest level of dance! Their synthesis of classical music, hip hop, pop and break dance, invented by them and still unrivalled in quality, forms the basis for a danced media critique under the conditions of social media and thus hits one of the very big pain points of our time.
