About the Concert

The Grammy-winning pianist and composer Brad Mehldau has long been bridging musical worlds and shaping modern jazz with interpretations that combine intellect, emotion, and structure. Kirill Gerstein, who feels equally at home in classical music as in jazz, is appreciated for his dynamic musicality and curiosity, connecting different musical voices with insight and imagination. Their collaboration arose from a shared fascination with the space between composition and improvisation. In this concert, they are already setting the first accent of our Beethoven focus for his 200th anniversary in 2027. Our Artist in Residence Kirill Gerstein has a particularly close connection to him: "My exploration of the written and the improvised in music takes its starting point from Beethoven's spirit."

Biographies

Brad Mehldau

Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau’s most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio (recently re-packaged and re-released as a 5-Disc box set by Nonesuch in late 2011). During that same period, Mehldau also released a solo piano recording entitled Elegiac Cycle, and a record called Places that included both solo piano and trio songs.
