About the Concert

Brahms was not lucky in love. For many years all his affection belonged to the wife of his best friend: Clara Schumann. She liked him, but there was no thought of a love affair. When she died in 1896, Brahms also already sensed his approaching death - his last compositions give expression to this. He knew that Clara had liked the organ, so it is no coincidence that he inscribed his mourning for her in compositions for this grandiose instrument.
Max Reger, on the other hand, was in the midst of life when he created his Choral Fantasias. He had been deeply hurt by a music critic who accused him of having too little inventiveness and of being too weak a personality in general. He responded with these same Choral Fantasies, and clearly: inventive and full of individual expression, they are considered today to be masterpieces of Reger.
