Cinema for your ear

From the bright sound of bells to warm string sounds to quivering timpani rolls - anyone who thinks of their favorite movies automatically has a melody in their ear. Film music arouses and intensifies emotions, it makes the images we see resound. No dark scene, fantastic journey, epic battle or love story can touch our heart without music.

Sometimes music even plays a visible role in film. Then the picture amplifies the sound and shows how delicate, sensitive and at the same time powerful musicians or even a whole orchestra can be in creating melodies.

You can experience our orchestra both in front of and on the screen: In various events we present the best of film music. In the film "TÁR" our musicians are conducted by Hollywood star Cate Blanchett.

Die Dresdner Philharmonie in Hollywood

If someone were to ask us about the most improbable things that ever happen to an orchestra in everyday life, this would certainly be among the top 5: A renowned film producer calls our artistic director and asks if our orchestra would be willing to play in Todd Field's new film with Cate Blanchett.

IN FRONT of the camera.

That's exactly what happened, and so the Dresden Philharmonic became part of the drama "TÁR". It tells the story of the fictional conductor Lydia Tár (Blanchett), who becomes the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra and ultimately fails due to her use of power.

Large parts of the film are set in Berlin, but many orchestral scenes were shot with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra at the Kulturpalast Dresden. The film has already won several awards, most recently entering the race for this year's Academy Awards (Oscars) with 6 nominations.

Filming TÁR was a unique experience for the orchestra and several individual musicians, who also took on speaking roles in TÁR. In the following clip, you can look behind the scenes with our orchestra and find out what it was like for them....

„Film Nights“ on the banks of the river Elbe

For many years, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra has made an appearance at the „Film Nights“ in the summer and brings music to the stage which fits the wonderful atmosphere on the banks of the Elbe. Naturally, this is mostly film music. Classics like the music to "Star Wars", "Jurassic Park" or "Harry Potter". But we also play works that create images and stories in the mind, like "Peer Gynt" by Edward Grieg. And we're there for the whole family: This year Malte Arkona will host our Kids' Night.
