About the Concert

Joe Hisaishi is a living legend. His soundtracks for the award-winning films of Studio Ghibli make the hearts of not only film fans around the world beat faster. The Japanese composer also has a "classical" side, as he impressively demonstrates with his viola concerto here. The title "Saga" is fitting, as the whole piece feels like a grand narrative without words. Another narrative is Rachmaninov's Third Symphony, which he wrote in America but still sounds very Russian. After the great success of his Second Symphony composed in Dresden, his Third initially remained in its shadow. Listening to it today, it is hard to understand why, as it captivates you right from the start with a mysterious motif...
