About the Concert
Tickets for these and other events will go on sale on 21 JUNE, as will election tickets for the coming season.
He would have liked to become a violin virtuoso himself. Jean Sibelius put his heart and soul into his only solo concerto - and created a work that demands a lot from the soloist, especially in the furious finale, which was once even called a "polonaise for polar bears". Moments of stillness and merriment also alternate in "En Saga", which Sibelius composed in his youth.
The symphony in the second part of the concert also refers to Sibelius: the Briton Vaughn Williams dedicated it to his revered colleague, seeing himself in the tradition of a music that connects emotional states with states of nature. And so pastoral sounds resound in this work, which he wrote in complete seclusion in the middle of the Second World War. A refuge from the horrors of the time?
