When Robert Schumann heard the Piano Trio in E-flat Major by his fellow composer Franz Schubert, he wrote in agitation that it "swept over the musical life of the time like an angry celestial phenomenon". And indeed, the boundaries of chamber music are explored to all extremes here: the themes are stretched, the melodies circle and wander through far-flung keys, abysses open up again and again, emotions are discharged. A challenge for every chamber musician, which the two Philharmonic musicians Thomas Otto and Victor Meister, together with their trio guest Andreas Hecker, gladly take up. To this end, they have chosen Haydn's masterful C major trio, which he composed for a London friend and into which he incorporated Scottish folk tunes. And finally, Mendelssohn's Trio in C minor, which is reminiscent of Beethoven's famous Fifth not only with its key but also with the furious drama of the first movement.
