About the Concert

Mysterious and at the same time sublime - this is how a renowned music critic describes Schubert's great late work, his String Quintet in C major, which will be performed as the main piece tonight. He wrote it shortly before his death and never got to hear it himself. To this day, music lovers bow before this "sonic mystery". Particularly memorable is the slow second movement, which is often used as film music, for example in "The Human Stain" and "Limits of Control". Unusually, Schubert specifies two cellos instead of two violas, as is usually the case in string quintets. This gives the music its particularly warm, deep sound.
