About the Concert

It doesn't get any lower than that. The double bass is usually somewhat overshadowed by its string instrument colleagues and usually forms the tonal foundation of classical music. Not, however, when it is allowed to play solo. This is the case in Vanhal's Double Bass Concerto, which is one of the showpieces of every bassist and shows that there is much more to this large instrument than "just" low notes. Solo concertos for horn are also relatively rare, although the noble wind instrument with its warm and full sounds belongs to the standard instrumentation of the orchestra. Joseph Haydn, however, had a soft spot for the horn and not only used it in a completely new way in his symphonies, but also wrote, for example, the concerto that our solo hornist plays in this programme. Finally, Mozart's divertimenti KV 136 and 137 congenially unite the main instruments of the classical period in an overall chamber music sound.
