Few themes in classical music are as well-known as the beginning of Peter Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. The chords of the first bars span almost all 88 keys, covering a full seven and a half octaves. What is less well known is that there is a first version of the concerto, which was only rediscovered later. Thanks to Kirill Gerstein, it can be heard in concert halls again today. He himself had noticed a note in the second movement that simply seemed wrong to him. He did some research, came across other versions of the concerto and ended up writing an entire article about this note. But don't worry, you don't have to go into detail to get close to Tchaikovsky's music. Melodious, sonorous and with all its emotional shades, it appeals to audiences just as much as it did 150 years ago.

Biographies

Dima Slobodeniouk

Conductor

Dima Slobodeniouk is celebrated for his musical expertise and profound interpretations. Born in Russia, the conductor moved to Finland in 1991 and completed his studies there. From 2016 to 2021, he was Chief Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Sibelius Festival, and from 2013 to 2022 Chief Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia. Recently, he has made his debuts at the Bavarian State Opera and with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, among others.

Kirill Gerstein

The pianist Kirill Gerstein plays with an energetic, imaginative and musical presence that has brought him to the forefront of the international professional world. Solo and concert performances have taken him from Europe to the United States, East Asia and Australia. He has long championed the importance of teaching in the lives of musicians and is currently Professor of Piano at the Hanns Eisler Academy in Berlin and a member of the teaching staff at Kronberg Academy.
