About the Concert
Richard Strauss's tone poem orchestrates the ups and downs of the emotions of the womaniser Don Juan with much opulent pathos and richness of colour, telling of his lust and passion. Powerful and exuberant themes of self-expression alternate with lyrical seductive melodies of lovemaking. The mischievous Till Eulenspiegel roamed the countryside to hold a mirror up to the authorities with his cheeky jokes. Strauss' intention was that the "people in the concert hall should really laugh for once". So let us be carried away by the masterly stories set to music.
