Gido Maier was born on August 30, 1971 in Aalen (Württemberg). He received his first drum lessons at the age of 8 with Manfred Schiegl, later also with Joachim Sponsel. He studied percussion at the universities of Stuttgart and Hannover with Prof. Klaus Treßelt, Werner Zühlke, Albrecht Volz, Manfred Kniel and Prof. Rainer Seegers. Prior to his employment in Dresden, he worked as a percussion teacher at the Sigmaringen Music School and as principal timpanist of the Royal Galician Philharmonic Orchestra in Santiago de Compostela, among other positions. Since January 2004 he has been principal percussionist of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra.
