The Texas-born tenor Joseph Dennis studied at the New York-based Juilliard School and has been honored with numerous awards, including the top prize at the Gerda Lissner Foundation competition. After winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, he secured various engagements in the United States. Notably, he performed as Boris in "Katya Kabanova" at Seattle Opera, Des Grieux in the Emmy-winning production of "Manon," and Števa in "Jenůfa" at Des Moines Metro Opera and the Spoleto Festival in the world premiere of Huang Ruo's "Paradise Interrupted" (in the original language: Mandarin). His career further unfolded with engagements as Alfredo in "La Traviata" at Memphis Opera, Duca in "Rigoletto" at North Carolina Opera, Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor" at Virginia Opera, and Governor in "Candide" with the Warsaw Philharmonic. He also performed Tamino in "The Magic Flute" at Central City Opera. Quickly gaining attention in Europe as well, he embarked on his career becoming immediately a member of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera. There, he took on a variety of roles including Tamino, the Italian Singer in "Der Rosenkavalier," Nick in "La fanciulla del West," Jaquino in "Fidelio," Brighella in "Ariadne auf Naxos," and Hugo in Lortzing's "Undine." He also sang important roles such as Alfredo in "La traviata," the title role in "Werther," and embodied th role of Ernesto in "Don Pasquale." Since 2018, Joseph Dennis has been a member of the soloist ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden, where he can be heard regularly in roles such as Tamino, Lenski, Belmonte, Don Ottavio, Ferrando, Steuermann/ Der fliegende Holländer. Last season 21-22 he was also heard as Baron Kronthal in Lortzings' Wildschütz and Walther von der Vogelweide in Tannhäuser. In summer 22' he also made guest appearances as Alfredo/ Traviata at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv and as Tamino at the North Carolina Opera. Since 2018, Joseph Dennis has been a member of the ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden, where he regularly performs roles such as Tamino, Lenski, Belmonte, Don Ottavio, Ferrando, and the Steersman in "Der fliegende Holländer" (The Flying Dutchman). In the past 21-22 season, he was also heard as Baron Kronthal in Lortzing's "Der Wildschütz" and as Walther von der Vogelweide in "Tannhäuser." During the summer of 2022, he made guest appearances as Alfredo in "La traviata" at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv as well as Tamino at the North Carolina Opera. His concert repertoire spams from the Baroque to contemporary works, and has performed very successfully in recitals at the Vienna State Opera and most recently at the Semperoper Dresden. In the 2022/23 season at the Semperoper Dresden he embodied the role of Ismaele in "Nabucco". Important debuts in new productions followed with the youthful heldentenor roles as Ritter Hugo von Ringstetten in Albert Lortzing's Undine at the Leipzig Opera and at the Prague National Theater, where he sang Wenzel Strapinski in Zemlinsky's Kleider machen Leute. During the summer, he made another appearance at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, portraying Pinkerton in "Madama Butterfly." In the 23/24 season, alongside his commitments in Dresden, he makes his debut at the Washington National Opera in the world premiere of Jeanine Tesori's opera "Grounded." He will also return to the Prague National Theatre for more performances of "Kleider machen Leute".
