The Leipzig Opera Children's Choir (Kinderchor der Oper Leipzig) has existed as an in-house children’s chorus since 1990, playing an integral role in child and youth development within the Department of Education. Prior to then, the Singschule des Musikunterrichtskabinetts der Stadt Leipzig (Singing School of the Conservatory of the City of Leipzig) had performed the children’s roles at the Leipzig Opera and at the affiliated Musikalische Komödie (Musical Comedy Theatre) as a permanent guest chorus, directed by the church musician and opera singer Anne-Kristin Paul-Mai.
In 2005, Sophie Bauer took over the musical direction of the Children’s Choir. On her initiative, a Youth Chorus was founded at the Leipzig Opera in 2007/08 as well. Currently, 220 children, adolescents and young adults aged between four and 25 perform at the opera.
The Leipzig Opera Children's Choir serves as musical playground for children and young people aged 4 to 18. Based on a well-structured training concept, the children are gradually prepared for their diverse musical and acting roles. This special way of teaching both music theory and practical experience is a concept unique to Leipzig.
