The British-German soprano Sarah Wegener has won international acclaim for her deeply felt expressiveness, stylistic versatility and brilliant interpretation of the text. Her artistic repertoire ranges from Handel through Strauss, Wagner and Mahler to contemporary music – in concert, on the opera stage and in the art song.
Her musical partners include conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Vladimir Jurowski, Edward Gardner, Petr Popelka, Andris Nelsons, Semyon Bychkov and Daniel Harding. She performs with renowned orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, the Orchestre de Paris, the Czech Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Her musical journeys take her to major concert halls around the world, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the philharmonic halls in Berlin, Cologne, Munich and Paris, the KKL in Lucerne, the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She is also a regular guest at renowned festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Oxford Lieder Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Festival de Lanaudière.
In the 2026/27 season, Sarah Wegener will once again devote herself with great intensity to key works by Mozart, Zemlinsky, Wagner and Mahler. The season kicks off with her performing Mozart’s Requiem with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling, at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. At the Vienna Musikverein, she will perform Zemlinsky’s Lyrical Symphony with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Markus Poschner. Further highlights include Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and his Second Symphony with the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sarah Wegener also performs regularly as a lieder singer, delighting her audiences at recitals, including at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Kölner Philharmonie. On the opera stage, she has given compelling performances in roles such as Sieglinde, Freia and Agathe at renowned theatres, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Prague State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Saarländisches Staatstheater. She has a special affinity for the music of our time and regularly collaborates with contemporary composers.
Sarah Wegener also makes a striking impression in the symphonic repertoire, performing works by Schoenberg, Sibelius, Penderecki and Widmann, amongst others. Her discography reflects the wide stylistic range of her artistic work: the albums *Into the Deepest Sea* and *Zueignung* have won multiple awards. For her interpretation of B. A. Zimmermann’s song arrangements, she received the Choc de Classica and the German Record Critics’ Prize. Her recording of Jörg Widmann’s *Drittes Labyrinth* was nominated for the OPUS Klassik award.
Sarah Wegener studied singing with Prof. Bernhard Jäger-Böhm in Stuttgart and furthered her training in masterclasses with Dame Gwyneth Jones and Renée Morloc. Originally trained as a double bassist, she brings a particular musical depth and sensitivity to her performances. Since 2024, she has been passing on her experience as a professor of singing at Zurich University of the Arts – with the same passion and dedication with which she herself performs on stage.
