Simon Eberle

Principal Cello

Simon Eberle is Associate Principal Cellist of the Dresdner Philharmonie.

He gained international recognition by winning First Prize and the Mahler Prize at the 3rd International Gustav Mahler Competition 2021 in Prague, as well as the Gold Medal at the 5th Manhattan International Music Competition 2020.

As principal cellist, he has performed with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Hamburger Camerata, and on a temporary contract with the orchestra of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. He also gained formative experience as a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Academy of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.

After being a member of the German National Youth Orchestra and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, his further orchestral career included engagements with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and a temporary contract with the Munich Philharmonic.

He completed his Master’s degree with highest honors under Jens Peter Maintz in Berlin, having previously studied with Troels Svane in Lübeck and Wen-Sinn Yang in Munich. He received further artistic inspiration in masterclasses with David Geringas, Frans Helmerson, Wolfgang Boettcher, Natalia Gutman, Anner Bylsma, and Gary Hoffman (Kronberg Academy).

As a soloist, he has performed under conductors such as Reinhard Goebel, Werner Ehrhardt, Dietger Holm, and Peter Eötvös. A particular focus of his chamber music activity lies in the string trio and string quartet repertoire. He studied with the Artemis Quartet in Berlin and worked regularly with Tabea Zimmermann and Heime Müller. Additional artistic guidance came from members of the Vogler Quartet and Armida Quartet, as well as from Ferenc Rados, Pamela Frank, Klaus Hellwig, and Gábor Takács-Nagy. He is also a regular member of the Frielinghaus Ensemble and has appeared as a substitute with the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Goldmund Quartet.

He has appeared at renowned festivals such as the Heidelberger Frühling, the Verbier Festival, the Zermatt Festival, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Hangzhou International Music Festival, the St. Petersburg Festival of the White Nights, as well as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. On these occasions, he has performed with artists including Igor Levit, Viviane Hagner, Boris Garlitzky, Marc Bouchkov, Kalle Randalu, Pekka Kuusisto, Fabian Müller, Veronika Eberle, and David Geringas.

Simon Eberle has been a scholarship holder of Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz, the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the Jürgen Ponto Foundation, and the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation. At the Moritzburg Festival 2018, he received two audience awards. Further distinctions include an audience award from the Konzertverein Ingolstadt and a sponsorship prize from the city of Donauwörth.

He plays a violoncello by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1847), generously loaned from a private collection.
