About the Concert

Almost everyone knows "Fidelio". But who knows "Leonore", its first version? If at all, one hears its overture in concerts, but as a complete opera it has only been rediscovered for the stage in recent years. Premiered in 1805, almost ten years before "Fidelio", "Leonore oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe", as Beethoven initially named his work, did not have much success. This was also due to the fact that Vienna was occupied by Napoleon and the audience consisted mainly of his soldiers, not the Beethoven connoisseurs and fans. But he was also dissatisfied himself, wanting to emphasize the dramatic core of his "Leonore" even more.
Nevertheless - even this first version already shows Beethoven's experimental spirit: how he tries to combine symphonic music and opera, how he finds new paths for dramatic music. For many, therefore, it is even the more daring and unconventional of the two versions. We have invited the Baroque specialist Dorothee Oberlinger to direct the concert performance of "Leonore" as part of our Beethoven focus. Tabatha McFadyen is responsible for the semi-staged production.

Co-production with the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci.
