Perhaps the beginning of Beethoven's Fifth is better known, but he himself considered his Third, the "Eroica", to be his best symphony. And it too begins with striking beats that capture the listener's attention and never let go, whether in the first movement, where this opening recurs again and again, in the second movement, the famous funeral march, or in the third, in which the horns make their grand entrance. Chief conductor Sir Donald Runnicles loves Beethoven's music and has deliberately placed this powerful and expressive symphony at the end of the year: May it continue to have an effect into the new year with its power and dignity.
