About the Concert

Perhaps the beginning of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is more well-known, but he himself considered his Third, the "Eroica," to be his best symphony. And it also begins with a striking rhythm that captivates attention and never lets go - whether in the first movement, where this beginning recurs, in the second movement, the famous funeral march, or in the third, where the horns have their grand entrance. Our future chief conductor Sir Donald Runnicles loves Beethoven's music and has intentionally placed this powerful and expressive symphony at the end of the year: May it continue to have an impact with its strength and dignity into the new year.

Biographies

Sir Donald Runnicles

Future chief conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra

Sir Donald Runnicles will become Chief Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic at the start of the 2025/26 season; he already serves as Chief Conductor Designate in 2024/25. The Scottish-born conductor is also GMD of the Deutsche Oper Berlin until mid-2026. He stands for the principle of quality over quantity and has built up close artistic relationships with renowned institutions worldwide. His expertise in the opera and concert repertoire is in demand everywhere, and the German repertoire is particularly close to his heart.

Maria Ioudenitch

In 2021, the American-Russian violinist Maria Ioudenitch achieved her international breakthrough by winning three major violin competitions. For her debut album "Songbird" on Warner Classics, which, like her chamber music performances, is characterized by innovative programming, she received an Opus Klassik in 2023. After making her debut with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra at the Kulturpalast and on tour in the UK in spring 2024, she is now returning for the end-of-year concerts.
