With Edward Elgar's Serenade for Strings, we begin our short concert. It was the first "hit" of the English composer. Right from the start, a mysterious, almost ethereal atmosphere is created by softly plucked strings, known as pizzicati. The slow middle movement is particularly famous. Its warm, heartfelt melody is loved by the English so much that it is still often heard at weddings or memorial services.
In contrast, the story of Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto in D major begins almost like a little musical detective story. For around two hundred years, the score lay unnoticed in the Prague National Library, and no one suspected that it was by Haydn himself. It was not until 1951 that the original manuscript was discovered. Since then, the work has become one of the most popular cello concertos of all time. No wonder, as it combines virtuosic brilliance with wonderfully lyrical melodies, as if the cello were singing a grand operatic aria without words on stage.

At our abgeFRACKt concerts, things are quite different: the orchestra does not wear tails on stage. No one need fear clapping at the wrong moment.
Anyone who wants to learn more about the music can download the free Wolfgang app onto their smartphone and receive live explanations about the work during the concert. Afterwards, we invite you to stay and enjoy the abgeFRACKt cocktail (also non-alcoholic), a glass of wine or beer in the café "Tutti", to relax, chat, or look out over the city from the balcony.Edward Elgar
