About the Concert

Tickets for these and other events will go on sale on 21 JUNE, as will election tickets for the coming season.

Nature, loss and the earth spirit, how does that fit together? The three works in our season opening have to do musically in different ways with farewell and hope. Edward Elgar's famous Cello Concerto was his last work, in which he gave touching expression to tragedy and pain. It will be performed by Gautier Capucon, whom we welcome in this concert as Artist in Residence. Strauss, on the other hand, certainly had Nietzsche's well-known work in mind with Zarathustra, but said himself that Faust's summoning of the earth spirit inspired him above all to write this symphonic poem. Most people, however, know the beginning as the film music for Kubrick's "A Space Odyssey". Kahchun Wong

Conductor

In May 2022, Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong was appointed Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra for an initial five-year term, beginning in September 2023. Praised by Musical America for the “depth and sincerity of his musicality,” he first came to international attention as the winner of the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2016. Previously, he was Chief Conductor of the Nuremburg from 2018 to 2022.

Gautier Capucon

Violoncello

Gautier Capuçon is a true 21st century ambassador for the cello. He performs internationally with many of the world's finest conductors and instrumentalists and is also a passionate ambassador for the Orchestre à l'École association, which brings classical music to more than 40,000 school children across France. In January 2022, Gautier Capuçon set up his own foundation to support young and talented musicians at the beginning of their careers and to strengthen his commitment to young artists. The multiple prize-winner receives worldwide recognition for his musical expressiveness and great virtuosity and the deep sonority of his instrument "L'Ambassadeur" by Matteo Goffriler from 1701.
