About the Concert

This program combines chamber music of the 20th and 21st centuries with strong rhythmic impulses and vibrant timbres. Florent Schmitt and Heitor Villa-Lobos show how different modernity can sound: here French refinement, there Brazilian energy and urban noises. Andrey Rubtsov's "Marbella Fantasy" brings a colorful contrast to the program with Mediterranean flair and virtuoso freedom. With "Techno Parade" by Guillaume Connesson, pulsating, almost dance-like movement enters, consciously borrowing from pop and club rhythms. "The Blacksmith" by our Composer in Residence Sir James MacMillan captures archaic power and folkloric elements, condensing them into concise music. The conclusion is Valerie Coleman's "Portraits of Langston," a musical homage to Langston Hughes, one of the most famous poets of the African American artistic movement Harlem Renaissance.
