Do you hear music differently when you know how it was created? This may well be the case with Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony. He had allowed himself to be persuaded to marry a woman, even though he loved men. A big mistake, as he soon realised, which drove him to a complete mental breakdown. He wrote his inner struggles, his guilty conscience towards his wife, all the games of hide-and-seek with his inclinations into this symphony. But whether we know the story or not, its deep emotional content - it is also called "The Tragic" - still has an immediate effect today.
