Mahler 5

Film music and more: Mahler's Fifth and Mozart

About the Concert

"The Fifth is a cursed work. No one can get hold of it," wrote Gustav Mahler in his diary. Today, it is one of his most popular and best-known symphonies. This is certainly also due to the fact that Visconti used its slow movement in his film "Death in Venice". And at the latest since the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra recorded this music with Cate Blanchett for the film TÁR, it has become one of the classics of late Romantic symphonic music for many.
With some works, it takes decades for the public to learn to appreciate and love them.

Mozart's Violin Concerto in G major was different, with listeners going into raptures at the very first performances. Today, the work is one of the "earworms" of its genre in the best sense of the word. Josef Špaček, who stood in for Pekka Kuusisto, who fell ill at short notice, will play it for us.
