About the Concert

What happens when a 29-year-old composer shifts tradition a little – and another initially considers his own work unplayable? Our concert combines two classics that did not immediately succeed. Beethoven's First Symphony starts surprisingly "wrong" and already in 1800 shows that someone here knows the rules – and consciously stretches them. Contemporaries found the work too loud and too bold. Today, it is seen as the beginning of a new musical era. Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto was initially sharply rejected by his friend Nikolai Rubinstein, who was supposed to play the premiere; even Tchaikovsky himself was initially not convinced of his composition. The work "emigrated" and celebrated its premiere in Boston of all places. Only at its second performance did it find success in Russia and today it is one of the audience's absolute favorites. The monumental beginning is as legendary as it is unique: the powerful chords do not return in the further course of the piece...

Biographies

Aurel Dawidiuk

Until the summer of 2026, Aurel Dawidiuk is the very first Associate Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, after which he starts his tenure of General Music Director of Bochumer Symphoniker in August 2026. Born in Hanover, he first studied piano and organ, then conducting. He has won several organ and piano competitions with flying colours and continues to perform on both instruments, while rapidly expanding his conducting career.

Alexander Melnikov

Alexander Melnikov completed his studies at the Moscow Conservatory under Lev Naumov. One of his most formative musical experiences in Moscow includes an early encounter with Svjatoslav Richter, who thereafter regularly invited him to festivals in Russia and France. He is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards at eminent competitions such as the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau (1989) and the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels (1991). Known for his often unusual musical and programmatic decisions, Alexander Melnikov developed his career-long interest in historically informed performance practice early on.
