About the Concert

A symphony like a book? Comparisons sometimes fall short, but one is not mistaken when comparing the symphony "Kaddish" by the Polish composer Weinberg to a monumental novel. One that traces an entire era, with many characters, situations, voices. Diverse and so captivating that one does not want to stop reading, in this case: listening. "Kaddish" is dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Uprising in 1943, during which many relatives of the composer also perished. Tragedy, sorrow, and despair thus define the music, but music always offers hope: by evoking emotions, it also awakens the human in us. The concerts on May 10 and 11 are part of the commemoration of 80 years since the end of World War II and will also be performed in Wrocław. They continue the collaboration between the Dresden Philharmonic and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic. At the invitation of the Dresden Philharmonic

Biographies

Jacek Kaspszyk

Jacek Kaspszyk is one of Poland's leading conductors and is currently Music Director of the Poznań Opera. He was previously Artistic Director of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, as well as Music Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Polish National Opera. He also regularly conducts in other parts of Europe, such as Germany and the UK, as well as in China and Japan. As a recording artist, he is particularly celebrated for his interpretations of works by Polish composers.

Sergei Babayan

American pianist Sergei Babayan comes from a family of Armenian musicians and began to attract attention at international competitions in 1989, which marked the beginning of his world career. Today, he is considered “one of the greatest pianists of our time” (Bachtrack) and inspires with emotional sound, technical brilliance and breathtaking virtuosity. As an exclusive artist of Deutsche Grammophon, he has a growing discography of award-winning recordings to his name.

Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk

Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk studied in Wroclaw and Vienna and is considered one of the most outstanding young Polish sopranos. She is known for opera roles such as Gilda in “Rigoletto”, Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute”, Rosina in “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and Violetta in “La Traviata”. She also has an extensive repertoire of oratorios and concert works, as well as art and folk songs in several European languages.

NFM Wrocław Philharmonic

NFM Wrocław Philharmonic is one of the leading symphony orchestras on the Polish music scene. It was established in 1945 as Wrocław Philharmonic and in 1994, it was named after Witold Lutosławski. In 2015, with the inauguration of its new headquarters, the NFM (Narodowe Forum Muzyki/National Forum of Music), it got its current name. In addition to its regular concerts, the orchestra carries out many different artistic projects, including educational and outreach concerts, recording sessions and international touring.
