Catherine Foster

In 2022 Catherine returns to Bayreuth in a new production of Tristan und Isolde by Roland Schwab.

In addition to other roles of the heavy dramatic soprano repertoire such as Elektra, Turandot and Isolde, the English soprano Catherine Foster became known worldwide especially for her interpretation of Brünnhilde, which she performed for six consecutive years at the Bayreuth Festival.

After completing her studies in 1999, Catherine Foster's career began in 2001 in Weimar, where she soon sang roles in the heavy dramatic repertoire. Shortly afterwards she was invited by other major opera houses and made her debut as the Empress at the Semperoper Dresden in 2006.

In addition to the Bayreuth Festival, she quickly conquered the international stages, appearing in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Washington DC, Budapest, Amsterdam and at the Liceu in Barcelona, among others.

Catherine Foster went from her first role as the Queen of the Night to Brünnhilde in the Ring of the Nibelung in the summer of 2008 in a very short space of time. Frank Castorf's new production of the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival in 2013, conducted by Kirill Petrenko, marked a high point in her career, which she pursues with great passion and dedication to "her" art.

Catherine's other roles include Senta, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and Don Carlo, Abigail, Leonora in Fidelio, Forza del Destino and Il Trovatore, Mimi, Tosca, as well as Elektra in Idomeneo and Elektra, and Empress and Dyer in Die Frau ohne schatten

In 2014 Catherine Foster was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for her work as an internationally successful singer.

In recognition of her Wagner interpretations, into which she puts much heart and soul, she was awarded the Reginald Goodall Prize by the London Wagner Society in 2018.

Catherine Foster has worked with outstanding conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Marek Janowski, Adam Fisher, Philip Auguin, Simone Young, Hartmut Haenchen, Alexander Soddy, Placido Domingo, Sir Donald Runnicles and Daniel Barenboim.

In 2022 Catherine returned to Budapest as Brünnhilde, singing Brünnhilde in Siegfried in the first cycle and all three Brünnhildes in the second cycle. Other highlights of the 2021/22 season included Elektra at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Wiesbaden and Tristan und Isolde at the May Festival in Wiesbaden.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, Catherine will make her Australian debut at Melbourne Opera as Elektra. She will also be seen as Isolde, Brünnhilde and Turandot this season.

Catherine Foster lives in Germany.
