About the Concert

Fantasy shapes this program, which shows courage in many facets: Beethoven showed courage when he combined piano concerto, chamber music, symphonic music, and choir in a single work with the Choral Fantasy, and also allowed the piano to begin with a free improvisation! The Hungarian György Kurtág distributes instrument groups in space for "...quasi una fantasia...", creating a very unusual and fascinating sound world. And Richard Strauss also faced a challenging task when, as a young man, he musically depicted the final hours of an artist, his death, and subsequent transfiguration in "Death and Transfiguration". The work made the composer instantly famous for his symphonic poems. Finally, a symphonic poem is also the "Helios" Overture by the Dane Carl Nielsen. In it, he describes the course of the sun from sunrise to sunset, as he experienced it himself during a stay in Greece.
