About the Concert

Since 2024, Niklas Jahn has been the organist of the Frauenkirche. In this concert, he presents himself with a particularly challenging program, especially Julius Reubke's Sonata on the 94th Psalm, which represents an extreme in several ways. Reubke composed the work at the young age of 24, creating one of the most dramatic and technically demanding pieces in the entire organ literature. The Sonata closely follows the biblical text of the Psalm, translating its anger, despair, and hope into a nearly orchestral sound language. The influence of Franz Liszt, with whom Reubke studied, is clearly audible, especially in the symphonic form and virtuosic structure. At the same time, the work demands enormous physical and mental control from the organist. The fact that Reubke died only two years later gives the Sonata an additional character of a singular, hardly repeatable exceptional work. Invited by the Dresden Philharmonic.
